Nicosulfuron 4% (formulated as an Oil Dispersion, or OD) is a selective, systemic post-emergence herbicide primarily used in maize (corn) fields. It is designed to control a wide variety of annual and perennial grassy weeds, as well as certain broadleaf weeds, without harming the crop.
- Weed Control Spectrum: Effectively targets narrow-leaved (grassy) weeds like barnyardgrass, crabgrass, foxtail, and wild oats, along with some broadleaf weeds like pigweed and amaranth.
- Systemic Action: It is rapidly absorbed through the leaves and roots, traveling quickly through the plant’s vascular system to the growing points (meristems).
- Mechanism of Action: It inhibits the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme. This stops the plant from synthesizing essential branched-chain amino acids, causing weed growth to cease immediately, followed by yellowing, necrosis, and plant death within 20 to 25 days.
- Crop Safety: Maize plants can safely metabolize the herbicide into inactive compounds, ensuring the crop remains healthy.
Application Details & Considerations
- When to apply: Best applied post-emergence when the corn is at the 3 to 8-leaf stage and weeds are actively growing (before they become too large).
- Compatibility: Nicosulfuron must not be mixed with organophosphate insecticides, as this can severely damage (burn) the corn.
- Limitations: Not suitable for all corn types (e.g., sweet corn or popcorn may be sensitive), and it should not be applied if the crop is under severe stress from drought or extreme temperatures
